Default Middle Position Differences in Nl and Limit

I was reading the beginning (pg 28-29) of Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players by Sklansky and Malmuth, and wondered about what the proper play would be in Nl.
Its stated that in early positon a small pocket pair 2-4 is alright to limp in with, aswell as small suited connectors. He states though that if the first 3-4 players fold though, that you most likely should fold ,because you wont be getting the right multi-player action. This is of course dealing with limit, how should you play these hands in middle positon: with it being passed to you, all limping in. Aswell as what your play would be in a tight or aggressive game.

In an unopened pot, I would probably tend to raise. That way, I can either steal the blinds or at least take control of the betting post flop. If it's a loose table, then I would probably just call to see a cheap flop, hit a set and trap.
