If he's a tricky lag I wouldn't recommend bloating the pot oop with a hand like Q9. You get yourself in too many difficult spots and are almost always outkicked if you flop top pair. If you wanted to check and call the flop I advise to continue playing your hand like a draw and to check and call the river. Since the turn went check check the only hands that could be shoving the river for value are Q10 and 10's. Possibly a hand like 46s or A4s. If you want to bet river as a block/value bet you should really be betting more prevent your opponent from bluff raising a weak bet.

Pre-flop sucks and the river bet has the big problem that you are giving away you have a semi-strong hand that is vulnerable and will fold to a raise (because you check/called on flop and checked on turn).

If you have done a lot of check/call (flop), check/raise (turn) lines, then he can expect you to have a decent hand here, and I would fold. If you havent its a nasty decision, and theres certainly a rationale for calling.

Don't reraise preflop. Don't bet the river.

As played sounds like it's a call vs this villain.

what kind of hands would he bet the flop, check behind turn and bluff the river?

maybe he has a strong hand and wanted to trap you with the turn check (see, I only tried to bluff the flop, now I check)

anyway, would he try to buy the pot on the flop after you 3bet-check?

Armen,

are you the same Armen from either CMiller's game in Peabody or The Barber's game in East Boston?
