Re: Is this now acceptable neighbor behavior?
Where my parents live - an affluent NJ suburb - they have a monthly used goods garbage collection. Tons of scavengers come and look through all your [censored]. It's not really that weird, because rich people throw out very usable stuff. I live in Hoboken, which is a small, city-like area across the river from NYC. There I will put things, like books or computer monitors, with signs that say free. Usually everything will be gone by the next day.

Re: Is this now acceptable neighbor behavior?
100% standard.
I had a 3rd brother who was kinda slow so we put him on the curb one thursday. Last I saw he was an extra in some Jami Kennedy movie. |

Re: Is this now acceptable neighbor behavior?
As long as the stuff you put outside isn't hazardous to the environment or kids or something (much of electronics stuff is regarded "special" trash here and needs to be disposed of differently), I think it's socially acceptable. It's not standard where I live, but no one would care.
You're in the neighbourhood watch? |

Re: Is this now acceptable neighbor behavior?
Last week-end our city had an official "Hidden Treasures Day" where everyone was encouraged to put stuff out on the curb with "free" signs. I was out of town camping for the week-end but I heard a lot of people did this.
Here's a linky to the event: http://www.ottawa.ca/city_services/r.../index_en.html |

Re: Is this now acceptable neighbor behavior?
Dude I've seen piles of broken concrete or dirt out front with signs that say "free" on them. A working office chair is totally normal.

Put a price tag on it and it gets ganked even quicker.

Re: Is this now acceptable neighbor behavior?
When I saw the first reply was "People do this in Boston all the time" and then I saw that a neighbor had a chair, I thought this was going to be about people in Southie that shovel out a parking space and then reserve it as there own until June.

Re: Is this now acceptable neighbor behavior?
Where I live they do the same thing, except they don't put signs on it that say 'Free'.
Oh yeah, and we call it 'garbage'. |

Re: Is this now acceptable neighbor behavior?
I did it with a microwave I didn't need anymore. I literally put it outside with a "free, still works" sign, and as I was walking away a guy slammed on his breaks, shouted, wow, thanks, and took it. Seems fine to me.

Re: Is this now acceptable neighbor behavior?
This stuff is A+ for everyone involved. Currently stuff in my apt found in the trash: couch, recliner, 2 bookshelves, dresser, twin mattress (for my dog to sleep on), barbells for lifting weights, world map poster, tv tray, guitar case.
Now I'm moving so I've been throwing stuff out. Stuff that was claimed (put next to trash): about 20 cans of corn (didn't want to lug it and it's 3 years old), frozen chicken (given to people in my apt), couch. No point buying stuff if it's free!!!!!!!!!!! |
