Re: i am an embarrassment
What I do, when I get burned out on poker, is switch games or do a whole lot of theoretical analysis (like working through face up values or the distribution of post flop equity of a hand versus ranges, or something like that). For me, burn out is almost always the result of boredom, and boredom is the result of not learning or experiencing something new. ymmv.

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] But if you've ever had as many real jobs as I've had [/ QUOTE ] A real job is one which you can earn a living wage off of that can sustain a family. Not that job working in the bakery at Panera or stocking groceries or delivering pizzas or working at the theatre or whatever other of these "real jobs" you talk about that can get you by week to week. Thats not a "real job" thats called a grind. If you actually mean "real jobs" like an ASP developer or draft engineer or something that can actually turn into a real career, then well, I apologize. But don't try to make it sound like you can't get anywhere with just a "crappy associates". I make 50+ a year with "just a crappy associates" - and I'm underpaid for what I do. /rant [/ QUOTE ] you know i have a "real job" working 40 hours a week and i basically do jack [censored] all day. i wear torn jeans to work, get to keep my piercings in, i sit at a desk posting on 2p2 and get a 500$ paycheck a week. then i play 50nl for a few hours and take 1k profit a month (easily done) and stash it into my ING mutual fund account. i figure in 10 years or so i can probably move down to a part time job, then in another 10 years retire. by not having an interest bearing account (i dunno if u do or not, but i have 3) in a few years time ur going to be kicking yourself when u realize how much $ you've lost out on in compounding interest. it's pretty phenominal stuff. edit: just wanted to make a point that in the morning if ur not playing you can still sit around and STILL get paid for it. [/ QUOTE ] Not to be a hater or anything but I dont see how you can plan to retire around 40-45 (I assume youre 20ish now) on 50k/year. |

Re: i am an embarrassment
You have $12k in the bank and then a 5 figure roll online? Or you have $12k total? If it's the former then you have plenty of money to live on without worrying about making money, but even so it's a good idea to put in some hours and try to make some money. I should try it some time, as well.

[ QUOTE ] nation i always thought you were older, why do you want to make some this kind of committment to anything at 23, just enjoy your time at the moment and get by. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah really. Way back in 2003 when I was 23 I thought Chris Moneymaker was the best player in the world. I played $5 SNGs on Paradise and worked at FedEx. And now look at me, I play 100 NL for a living! Balla. [/ QUOTE ] fwiw i'm 23, just got a job as a sharepoint developer/consultant, and am getting paid 65k (associates degree as well.) I have no idea why people think there is a strong correlation between level of education and earning potential (If this were the case all PHD's would be millionaires.) |

Re: i am an embarrassment
[ QUOTE ]
thank me later, but dont put in massive amounts of hands. play 1-2 tables and focus on decisions. [/ QUOTE ] i'll just second this. if you want to continue being a 1/2 grinder for the rest of your life play a massive amount of tables, but just playing a few tables will almost certainly make you a better player and probably a little saner. |

Re: i am an embarrassment
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] LOL @ being too lazy to play online poker. WOW. You're too lazy to walk to your computer chair and click a mouse?? NL200 is too mentally exhausting? I mean it's one thing to say you don't like online poker as justification for not playing, but laziness makes no sense to me as a reason. [/ QUOTE ] It is mentally exhausting to play your A-game at poker for more than a few hours at a time and I don't know any pro playing more than 30 hrs a week. Multitabling Poker takes 10X the mental concentration in a given hour than a typical desk job. [/ QUOTE ] i bet playing 6-7 tables of NL200 FR is just as monotonous if not more so than most jobs. that's probably why it's so draining. if you're having fun playing, then yes, it's definitely mentally draining; but, that gives you a different (a better) feeling than the terrible effects of boredom. if you're too "burned out" to get up and play poker, then what's the difference between you and someone with the "dreaded" desk job. |
