100k in index funds where to put 50k?
I dont know too much about investing and am looking for help. I already have 100k in index funds following the S&P. I have 50k more to invest. Should I just dump more into indexfunds or is there something else I should be looking at. I was thinking maybe some sort of international fund but basically know nothing about that. I wont need this money for a long time, I am young and just want to get a good return on it long term.

I think your plan to diversify overseas is a good one. There are a lot of index funds that track foreign stocks. Try to find one that combines Europe and Asia.

Oil futures is hopefully a joke.
I would recommend sticking with index funds, but as maxtower notes you may not want to put it all in the S&P 500 (large cap domestic). You could potentially diversify while increasing expected returns by investing in small, value, international, or emerging markets index funds. This is what seems most reasonable to me. |

Seems like a broad international fund is a pretty good idea here. Not sure where your first 100k is but Vanguard has a number of options that fit this need.

Switch the S&P fund to one that follows the Wilshire, put the other 50k in Dodge and Cox International while it's still open (DODFX)

Re: 100k in index funds where to put 50k?
I second putting the 50K in DODFX. I'm generally wary of non-index funds but Dodge and Cox has a long track record of beating indices while keeping expenses low. If the capital gains hit wouldn't be too bad I would shift 50K or so of the 100K you have in the S&P to a small cap value index like VIVSX for some broader diversication.

You should have a diversified Asset allocation. Read up on it if your not familiar.

a joke? you mean popping 1/3 of your portfolio into a volatile commodity is a bad idea?
for the record I think that within ten years oil prices will be significantly higher than they are right now and the overall dow will be back below 10k so it makes sense as a hedge play, but popping 50k into oil futures would be stupid. popping 50k into anything recommended on an internet bulletin board might be stupid. I agree that emerging markets funds are a good medium-term play and there's a ton of them out there now. |
