I don't want to get into a discussion over my views on drunk driving, as I always end up getting flamed even though my views aren't that drastic, but I wouldn't hold any personal responsibility for it if it happened in my mind. I also wouldn't go to the stand for someone who I thought was actually high risk of getting in an alcohol related accident (insert comment about how everyone's high risk at .08).

the whole "stand up for your friend regardless of the situation" is BS to me. if my best friend goes on a killing spree and confides in me, you better believe i'm turning him in.

I'd say tell him to get a good lawyer, but it sounds like he doesn't have two nickels to rub together.

No way in hell I'm going to blatantly lie under oath so my "friend" can not learn his lesson. I'm pretty sure I'm standing in a corner by myself here, but in my mind, perjury is one of the worst morale[sic] crimes you can commit.

I dont think lying under oath is something a good friend should be asking another good friend to do.

if your friend asked you to do this, he is terrible human being. If it was his first time I could understand him asking you this because he would be afraid etc but he is repeating.

Its easier for us to say u shouldn't do it, but u definetly shouldn't

either route seems perfectly acceptable. surely this guy knew that a 3rd time would have awful consequences, and he did it anyways.

so its not your responsibility to bail him out of the mess he himself created.

on the other hand, a white lie here and there never hurt anyone. i dont see any problems with saying that it was you who drove.

on a more relevant issue, you might be overestimating how much weight your unsubstantiated testimony will really have. you cant verify your story. its just your word. and it might be rather transparent that you are just trying to save your friends ass.

OP - this situation sucks and I feel for you, but I think it's pretty black and white and you shouldn't lie for him.
