I was watching some crappy sports program on FOX (local in NY) and the one guy was saying A-Rod still isn't "A REAL Yankee" if he hits 62 HR's and that the Yankee record would be tainted. I forget who it was, I've seen him on TV a million times.

BTW- He happened to mention Mattengly in his argument about "Real Yankees". Which begs the question... If A-Rod isn't a real Yankee because he hasn't won a ring, but Donnie is... What makes a "Real Yankee"?

Jesus, A-rod needs to get out of that evil town. We would take good care of him here in Chicago, we'd let him play shortstop too.

A real Yankee wouldn't upstage Derek Jeter by playing better than him.

Nah. I think even the normal fans are starting to see how special he is. Hitting 500 HR's opened the eyes of a lot of fans. Maybe it's my ignorant dumb Yankee pride, but he better f'ing stay.

I guess they only count players as "real" Yankees who came up in the Yankee farm system and/or played their entire career with them (Gehrig, Dimaggio, Berra, Ford, Mantle, Munson, Guidry, Mattingly, Jeter, Rivera, Posada). Or came back to them at the end of their careers (Billy Martin, Murcer, Martinez, Pettitte).

It is, of course, beyoond ridiculous. But I remember fans saying the same thing about Roger Maris when he hit 61. Mickey Mantle, who had been booed in previous years, suddently became a "true" Yankee.

As a Yankee fan, I hope Cashman and Steinbrenner pony up immediately after the end of the season. A-Rod will end up as one of the five greatest players ever.
