When he went on Crossfire he put it very well. He isn't a top-notch serious journalist, but compared to the other "real" news shows he seems like Albert Einstien.

Tom, forgive me if I'm wrong, but reading your criticism of Stewart gives me the idea that you're a republican who doesn't like the side Stewart takes and the ideas he has. And if that's the case - it's okay!

[/ QUOTE ]

It's possible to not like the side Stewart is pushing and not be a republican either. Some of us don't vote for giant touche OR turd sandwich, if you can believe it.

Stewart was asking about timetables, metrics for judging progress, and so on, and McCain said something to the effect of "Sure, as long as you want to set a timetable on surrender."

Wow! I will have to try that.

HEY THAT BULDING IS ON FIRE, SHOULD WE PUT A TIMETABLE ON WHEN WE'LL STOP TRYING TO PUT IT OUT?
Sure, as long as you want to surrender to flame!

While Jon Stewart is certainly biased - and capable of hiding behind the logo of The Comedy Central if he needs to - I consider him an intelligent man who often makes very good points.

In terms of political stance, the democrats have Stewart/Colbert while the republicans have O'Reilly. They've been going on and off for a long time now. It's just too bad for republicans that O'Reilly seems to be losing.

This is coming from a Stewart fan, though, so I'm sure some will disagree with me here.

[/ QUOTE ]

O'Reilly is a populist, and isn't on a COMEDY show. There's a big difference. However, Hannity is a better reference point for Republicans.

Stewart is just full of himself and takes the show too seriously for it to be funny. He's not smart enough to host a true debate/news show, and isn't funny enough to host a comedy show.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yet his show is a raging success. You might not think he's funny, but he's clearly 'funny' enough to host a comedy show. The Daily Show broke the stratosphere when Stewart took control. As far as ratings are concerned, he blew Kilborn out of the water.

[/ QUOTE ]

King of Queens ratings > Daily Show ratings. Therefore Kevin James = Comedic Genius.

Come on guys, just because something is popular... This is all subjective. I don't find him funny. A lot of college kids do. I like chocolate ice cream. A lot of people like vanilla. Am I now wrong? This is stupid.

I personally think that Stewart is not a good host of such a show. He was certainly better in the past and has gone down hill. Quite a few people agree with me. We don't have to find the same comedians funny.

[/ QUOTE ]

I understand, and am not trying to invalidate your opinion. But your wording made it sound like you were trying to exert some authority of your opinion over the mass of others who vehemently disagree .

I can't stand Rush, but still can recognize the fact that he makes for a great radio host (same goes for mahr, and others). It really seems as though you hate his politics and are letting that filter out his clear talent for hosting. I could be wrong, and either way I'm not trying to define or stereotype you. I would like to hear your reasonings though, because even most staunch conservatives think he's good at what he does.

Misfire:

Nice fyp! Didn't really care to point out why his analogy was bad.

When I watch Bill O'Reilly, I do it because I disagree with almost everything he says. In other words, I watch him because I find his (to me) ignorance and stupidity entertaining.

[/ QUOTE ]

I am not a Republican. I am, however, anti-socialist. So you are wrong yet again. However, I disagree with Stewart fairly strongly. Bill O'Reilly is also a pompous moron as well, but at least he doesn't attempt to be funny.

There are a lot of people whos politics I disagree with but find funny. You call it a talent for hosting, but I think he is an awful host. He just isn't funny in that role. Granted, a lot of people do think he is funny in that role. That's fine with me. A lot of people like a lot of stuff I don't like. Hmk pretty much hit it dead on saying he just reads normal news stories and makes funny faces or grunts. If I watch the Daily Show, I usually skip the Stewart segments and hope the correspondents are funny. Hopefully Dmitri Martin will get more shorts.

Colbert is a pompous jackass while pretending to be a pompous jackass. Colbert is witty and quick.

[/ QUOTE ]

I would agree with the sentiment that TDS has gone way down hill over the past couple of years. I'd say 2000-2003 were probably its peak years. I think a lot of it has to do with their strong correspondants leaving the show. None of the new correspondants have really stepped up. Some of them have their moments but they never really reach the genius of Colbert, Corell, and Corrdry. These guys pretty much carried the show and stewart was the center of it all with the news commentary.

However, I never really got into the Colbert Report. I find its kind of a one joke show. Its just the same style of satire over and over again. Since I know he's faking it I find the joke get tiresome. The real o'reily if far more hilarious.

I'll try to modify his analogy a little bit so its more accurate. Rather than a building being on fire, lets call it a backburn started in order to control and contain a wildfire. Now the backburn hs gotten out of control and is burning in every direction. Surely we cannot surrender!

The point is, using the emotionally charged word surrender, while technically borderline, is a cheap rhetorical trick. How about instead of calling it a surrender we call it 'bringing troops home to their loved ones?' Its just as (misleadingly) accurate, and uses the same emotional pull, but in the opposite direction. Leaving Iraq isn't surrendering in the sense that the word is intended to convey.

Jon Stewart is every bit the political hack that Sean Hannity is.

[/ QUOTE ]

Except he does it to be funny, only rarely trying to make biting points. Hannity thinks he is being serious.

[/ QUOTE ]

Daily Show viewers are the best educated and most knowledgable of all TV News Show viewers - and leave Fox News viewews in the dust

[ QUOTE ]
Other details are equally eye-opening. Pew judged the levels of knowledgeability (correct answers) among those surveyed and found that those who scored the highest were regular watchers of Comedy Central's The Daily Show and Colbert Report. They tied with regular readers of major newspapers in the top spot -- with 54% of them getting 2 out of 3 questions correct. Watchers of the Lehrer News Hour on PBS followed just behind.

Virtually bringing up the rear were regular watchers of Fox News. Only 1 in 3 could answer 2 out of 3 questions correctly. Fox topped only network morning show viewers.
