Re: My theory about music. Prove or disprove
These discussions are beaten to death, on top of the fact that they are based on opinions and record sales. Who cares if the Beatles are the most influential to other bands, and who cares if Brittany has the number 1 album. People claiming that they are proving the theory false by naming band X are contributing nothing to a theory that holds no ground. All that band X is a band that is held in high regard in the opinion of the majority of people. Opinions don't prove theories, people. I had this same discussion with a friend who claimed the same arugument as the OP by saying "There must be a reason why British bands have been held in such high regard" like the fact that "there must be a reason" proved anything.
On a side note, what matters in music is the relationship you have with whatever you listen to. That's all that matters. If a list of the greatest or what your friend likes influences why you like a band, then you're a [censored] retard. |

Re: My theory about music. Prove or disprove
Well, perhaps we need to parameterize the discussion a little bit... Let's just say, during the years, 1967 - 1980, living in the U.S.... the best bands were British... and the best solo acts were Americans... Hmmm... I would agree with the "band" portion of the statement. In fact, I used to play a little game to prove my point. You name me a great American band from that era, and I would name the better british counterpart. Ready? It would go something like this: Aerosmith -- Led Zeppelin ZZ Top -- Black Sabbath Boston -- Deep Purple Doors -- Yes Jefferson Starship -- Pink Floyd Rolling Stones -- Beatles ( lol ... hopefully, you get the point... ) As for individuals though, I think the Brits still get the edge... Billy Joel -- Elton John Iggy Pop -- David Bowie Bob Dylan -- Chumba Wumba my brain is fuzzy ... can't think of much more... |

[ QUOTE ] This is more of an observation than a theory. A theory would be if you said I think this is case because Americans are selfish. [/ QUOTE ] hmm, interesting theory actually. [/ QUOTE ] My theory about theory's or that Americans are selfish? Anyways it probably has to do with genres of music. Most of these have to do with Pop/Country/Rap which are largely solo artists, while most of the groups listed are classic rock bands. |

First, the Beatles and Rolling Stones are both british. Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith are not from the same era. Neither are Black Sabbath and ZZ Top, and it's a huge stretch to call them counterparts. |

Re: My theory about music. Prove or disprove
The problem with the OP is that one could argue that all the big bands from 90s on are American. You can even stretch that to the mid 80s and beyond, with only U2 being a prominent non-US band. All the big movements since the 80s (grunge, metal, boy band, rap, new country) have been dominated by American acts. You can certainly make a case that from the mid 60s to the punk movement, British bands dominated the music scene. But it hasn't been the case since then.
