quick Q: this is bad ettiquitte right?

This story is somewhat fictional because I have no clue what exactly happened, but it's basically the same situation.

So I've been raising a lot for the last few hours, and many players are getting sick of it. In a particular pot, some guy raises to 30 in EP, one caller, and i squeeze to 80. SB (a tight, smart player) repops all-in to 300, and shortstack BB calls all-in for 40 or so. Everyone else folds.


I tank, and finally fold, hoping to see SB's hand. SB says "yeah, you got it" and BB takes down the main with i think ace high or a small pair or something. As SB is about to muck, I want to see the hand so much, but I let him muck and move on to the next hand.

IWTSTH is always bad etiquette. In cases where it is perceived to be acceptable it is actually a different rule (such as show one show all).

the purpose of the rule is the prevent collusion, so unless you are asking to see a hand for that exact reason, IWTSTH is bad etiquette, correct.

This sounds bizarre - effectively someone bet 40 preflop, someone else called, then the better folded without even seeing the board for free? Is this really what happened?
Or was this river action?
