quids,

Peggy Lee - Fever

Hard to top that, and I generally agree re: women singing that song. Except for THE KING - Fever!

Donny Hathaway, like Sam Cooke, died way too soon.

The Ghetto
Jealous Guy

The Staples Singers are generally considered more gospel but I think a lot of the stuff they did falls under the "soul" heading. Mavis still performs, I saw her a couple of years ago and she was awesome.

Respect Yourself

Let's Do It Again

Also ElD mentioned Bill Withers, excellent choice. Imo his "Live at Carnegie Hall" record is a must have, one the best live albums of all time

Try Otis Redding's "Down in the Valley." Anything by him is great. His voice was made to sing soul.

One of my all-time favorites: The Reverend Al Green, and my favorite song of his (even though they're all damn good):

Love and Happiness

I second the previous recommendation of Solomon Burke. One of my favorite Solomon Burke songs: None of Us Are Free (can't find a good version of his on youtube)

Another favorite of mine is Marva Whitney. She's categorized more as funk but then funk and soul are pretty much sister genres, so I'll include her.

Marva Whitney - Things Got to Get Better (who's that bad-ass cat in the shadows directing the band...)

Dcifr,

Wow, I think that Buble rendition of Fever sucks really, really, really hard.

Otis Redding - Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay

Marvin Gaye - Let's Get It On (Jack Black's cover in High Fidelity was pretty damn sweet)

Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine

Al Green - Let's Stay Together

The Temptations - Papa Was a Rollin' Stone

Stax-Volt Volume 1
Stax-Volt Volume 2
Stax-Volt Volume 3

I just recently got all 3 of these and they are some of the best 25-30 CDs of music ever made. I load them all in to Winamp and shuffle and it's like a kickass soul oldies station that plays stuff you never heard in your life. I had never known of artists like Carla Thomas, William Bell, and Barbara Stephens, but they are nearly the equals of Otis Redding or Etta James. Highest possible recommendation.
