with Navy beating Notre Dame, the longest active losing streak of any team to another is Kentucky with 22 straight losses to Tennessee the bad news for Kentucky is that even if they beat the Vols, they'll still have the longest active losing streak with 21 straight losses to Florida [/ QUOTE ] lol |

Manute Bol once hit 6 3 pointers in one half. [/ QUOTE ] When he was with the 76ers, if he was in town to play the Bullets, he'd go to the community center I went to and play pickup basketball. He never went in the paint. He parked himself at the 3 point line and, if he got the ball, he'd take the 3. |

Re: random sports stats/facts that surprise you when you first hear th
great thread, especially the OP and his work.....
i can't believe that list of NFL rushing leaders from 1985-90. i haven't heard of a few and wouldn't have thought that any except george rogers led nfl in rushing. i did know rogers. what year was okoye? not on list, so earlier? or never led league?..... did i misread one name? was one joe morris? |

Re: random sports stats/facts that surprise you when you first hear th
ok, it was rushing TD's. okoye did lead the league in rushing yards, as did charles white. the rest were mega-stars. i do want to look up some of those RB's though, as i've never heard of some.

Re: random sports stats/facts that surprise you when you first hear th
Here's one that baffles me even though I followed it very closely at the time.
2002 is generally regarded as Tom Brady's worst season. It's the only year of his tenure the Pats missed the playoffs, he had fans scratching their heads, editorials written and such, speculating on the reasons for his sophomore slump (his breakup with Tara Reid was even blamed). Yet...he led the league in touchdown passes(!), the only time in his career until this season he has done that. And actually looking back, all his normal non-DVOA stats (yds, comp %, INTs, etc.) look pretty decent. Strange. |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] FWIW my statement was completely wrong. I still stand by my point that rebound numbers were crazy back then, which they were. [/ QUOTE ] Teams often have 4 or more players average over 10 points per game. Maybe you just got confused....I could see how points and rebounds are difficult to tell apart at times. [/ QUOTE ] Or maybe I was thinking of rebounds per 40 minutes, where teams in the 60s would regularly have 6+ players averaging over 10 per game, compared to the current era where teams usually have 2 or 3. [/ QUOTE ] Perhpas you were thinking of minutes played. Teams quite often have over 4 players average 10+ minutes played per game too. 100,385 and counting |

Re: random sports stats/facts that surprise you when you first hear th
[ QUOTE ]
You can look up the history bewteen the NHL and WHA yourself (just look at the Canada/Russia controversy), but the fact remains that Greztky was considered to have been playing "professional" hockey, yet somehow Stastny was not? [/ QUOTE ] The wording, is "major professional league" http://www.nhl.com/trophies/calder.html By this measure, Greztky obviously should have been excluded. But I think even more problematic than Stastny is Sergei Makarov who played for CSKA Moscow for 11 seasons before joining the NHL and winning the Calder. Considering CSKA's record against NHL teams in exhibition play (26-8-2) it's hard to argue it's any less "major league" than the WHA. From wikipedia: [ QUOTE ] Russian Super League is the highest division of the main professional ice hockey league in Russia, and is commonly considered third-best in the world after the NHL and the Swedish Elitserien. [/ QUOTE ] Yes, for purposes of the Olympics, Red Army players were considered "amateurs". However, this was an obvious legal fiction that the NHL was under no obligation to respect. It does seem that this rule has been interpreted selectively. |
