Default New XBox 360 \'Arcade Console\' announced - $279

Microsoft has finally verified and announced the 'Arcade Console' version of the 360. It's a replacement for the old core system, and a huge improvement.

Includes:

-256MB memory card
-Wireless controller + charger
-HDMI support
-5 free Live arcade games ( PAC-MAN Championship Edition, UNO, Luxor 2, Boom Boom Rocket and Feeding Frenzy)

That now puts a 360 with a decent setup within $30 of the Wii. Will be interesting to see how this one pans out.

256MB is still a beat, and Geometry Wars would be by far the best arcade game they could include, and they don't. This is pretty meh.

A system with no hard drive is insane. Also note that it's not listed as being backwards compatible.

Well, crap, now when I upgrade to 1080p I have to decide between the Elite and selling my old Premium system versus buying this one, using the same HD as I have now, an extra HDMI cable, and selling a Core system.

It's because you need a HDD for backwards compatibility.

Off topic, but if the main reason you are upgrading is for 1080p support - you can do 1080p through component. HDMI is required for blu-ray/hd-dvd for copyright protection, nothing to do with the technology.

I thought that most TVs don't accept 1080p over component? (As you said, not for technological reasons, but for copyright reasons).

The Xbox 360 can definitely do 1080p over VGA, though.

Most televisions have no problems with 1080p through component. The only ones I know that definitely do have a problem with it are some of the older Sonys.

Interesting. My likely 1080p target is a 58" Panasonic plasma, so I'll have to do some research into whether I can do that.

And the Xbox 360 will output 1080p through component? I don't recall a 1080p option on that screen where you select 720p/1080i/etc but I'd have to check again when I go home. wtf was everyone making such a big deal for about "zomg PS3 has HDMI and 360 doesn't" then? Solely because of HD-DVD playback?

Just good marketing on Sony's part. Most everybody associates 1080p with HDMI now. And providing HDMI to offer an enhanced gaming experience sounds alot sexier than forcing it on people for copyright protection.

Same sort of reason for why people then go out and spend $100+ on 'Monster' HDMI cables. Surely it looks better than those $10 HDMI cables you can buy online, right?
