Re: One of my friends thinks Theo Epstein is an overated GM.
I don't think he qualifies as "very good"....The fact that his payroll is limitless offsets the fact that he went and spent like 100 million for Dice-K (way too much for the result); too much for lugo, drew, clement, etc.....he's not bad by any means, but i wouldnt consider him very good

The only definite bust there is Clement, and while he probably would've ended up being overpaid, he was doing fine before catching a comebacker off his dome. Your view is very short-sighted. Calling out Dice-K is especially laughable (another thought on Dice-K: it's doubtful Theo was the driving force behind the big overbid. The owners had a big interest in landing him). |

[/ QUOTE ] also, when you consider that $51m will not count against the luxury tax (important for any large budget team), consider some incremental revenue from Japan, consider dice-k's age, and consider the fact he had to adjust to a 5 man rotation for the first time (he looked awfully good for a while this season), it's likely that this deal will end up looking very good |

Re: One of my friends thinks Theo Epstein is an overated GM.
if you look at all the free agent SP deals that have been signed in the last few years, and try to figure out which one has the best projected value for the team, i am struggling to come up with one that looks better than dice's.
is it a lock? no, no deal is a lock. but i'm sure glad we got dice instead of gil meche or barry zito or something. |
