In that case, it's time for a few Irish car bombs.

There's a drink called an Irish car bomb? I find that very offensive.

You pour about half a pint of Guinness, and then a shot comprised of half Bailey's, half Jamison. You drop the shot into the Guinness and chug the whole thing before the Bailey's goes unpleasant. It's a remarkably tasty drink, even if the name is a bit unfortunate. I got a bit of a history lesson once when I ordered a black and tan near an Irish girl who was studying in the states, so the car bomb isn't the only offender.

If it's a bar that prides itself on its cocktails I'll order of their cocktail menu and I won't rule out drinks on the girliness factor if it sounds tasty.

If I'm at a standard bar 95% of the time I'm drinking beer otherwise shots or something with coke.

If I'm back at mine with a bunch of people for post-pub drinks I'm 90% of the time drinking some weird cocktail involving cherry brandy and cointreau or other feminine ingredients. (my drinks cupboard rocks)

At the Monte Carlo in Minneapolis there used to be a bartender known for his Tio Pepe martinis (substitute Tio Pepe for vermouth).

Before pouring the drink, he would season the glass by taking an orange rind and squeezing it over the glass while holding a match to it. The oils from the rind would blow out as an aerosol and ignite, filling the glass with a brief burst of flame.

Always worth ordering when he was around.

It's a good looking bar, too.

FWIW, girls love doing these as races against each other. Then they get messed up and fall down.

Being in Texas, I do a lot of margaritas and mojitos. I used to do rum and coke as my standard, but I'm trying to get away from that. I've been experimenting with other cocktails to try and find a new go-to drink.

If you can find someone like this (Alberta) trying new cocktails can be a pleasure (Although she is no longer there). The Alembic (in the Upper Haight) is also a place where the cocktails are well thought out and the liquor selection is extensive. I think that you need to be confident that the bartender has the skills to make a proper cocktail. If not the experience is just not that enjoyable.

Yeah, I agree the name is extremely unfortunate.

Every time I've had 'em, it's been a pint of guinness, a shot of Bailey's and a shot of Irish whiskey. From the sounds of things, I've been getting a two for one deal on that.

"Goes unpleasant" is being polite. The Bailey's will curdle and get downright nasty if you don't chug it pretty quick. If you do, though, it's amazing how smooth that concoction is.
