Default Report: Al Qaeda Planning Summer Terror Spectacular

http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=3336148

"A secret U.S. law enforcement report, prepared for the Department of Homeland Security, warns that al Qaeda is planning a terror "spectacular" this summer, according to a senior official with access to the document.

"This is reminiscent of the warnings and intelligence we were getting in the summer of 2001," the official told ABCNews.com."

I'm surprised this has not gotten any attention in this forum, especially in light of the recent events in Britain. I fear that the lack of any terrorist attacks on US soil in the past 6 years has made us complacent. It is times like these that we need to remind ourselves of the threats that we face and reaffirm our resolve to protect our homeland. Let us not forget that despite our differences, we all have an interest in the safety of our country. So I call upon everyone in here to reflect upon our common interests over this July 4th holiday and take a moment to appreciate what we are protecting.

By the way, I have been absolutely sickened by some of the conspiracy theory posts that have been popping up in this forum over the past couple of weeks. To suggest that the US government orchestrated the attacks of 9/11 is despicable and insult to the people who lost their lives that day. It is on par with Holocaust denial in my opinion. Although I am opposed to outright censorship, I think Nielsio should be vehemently shouted down and shunned from this board. Although Borodog and I have had our disagreements in the past, I commend him for helping debunk the nonsense that Nielsio has been spewing.

Regards,
Steven Bickford

Sounds like a plan. I'll probably spare that moment after I down a couple of hot dogs and a few beers at a cookout, but before I upload my Paris Hilton porn collection to my new iPhone. It might be hard to reflect upon all of our common interests as I'm simultaneously blowing up a small part of our homeland with some fireworks, but I'll give it a try. If I forget to appreciate all that "we're protecting" before that, hopefully I'll at least remember when I come home to 8-table SnGs on Stars/go for a new high score in Wii Bowling.

Seriously, if you want to talk about terror threats, that's fine. And if you want to share your indignation concerning Neilsio, whatever. But do you honestly think I'm going to spend my holiday thinking about what some random internet poster "called upon" me to do? Chances are: probably not.

I take comfort in the fact there have been no attacks since 9-11 in the USA. Granted, anything can happen, but everyone has a watchful eye - I know I do. If the 9-11 attackers pulled what they did on 9-11 today, they would be beaten to death in a nano second. I fly a lot, and if I see anyone suspicous, I watch them the whole flight ready to pounce. Call me paranoid, but whatever, just the way it is.

The edge of suprise is lost for those terrorists. Yes, I guess if anyone is determined enough, they can blow up a car in front of a crowd. Tim McVeigh proved that. But as far as orchestrated attacks, I'd be suprised if Al Queda could ever pull anything like that again.

But I do like these leaked memos that happen every six months or so. Serves as a reminder...

Hmm, then why didn't you act on it back then, Mr. Official Man?

What revisionist BS. 9/11 had been in the works for years & could've been disrupted years before. Bush/CIA/FBI were totally unprepared (and yes Clinton had dropped the ball badly as well). I'll let others elaborate.

Note I don't doubt AQ wants to launch a spectacular or ten soon, and I'm surprised as anyone we haven't had anything happen again, but telling lies about 9/11 does no one any good, which is also why I have zero patience w/the conspiracy theories.

If there were any plans for something on US soil, I would peg Al Qaeda's likely course of action as doing something at a symbolic location on or near a symbolic date in 2009 within a year after a new president is sworn in. Admittedly, it's sort of a vague intuition there, but it's the opposite of what I would plan if I were a terrorist (which I am not).

They are in sort of a hard position of having to follow-up 9/11 with something just as spectacular and would be interested in topping that. If they don't go for a bigger body count, then the logical course of action would be to target a high-profile death. If there is a suspcion of something this summer, I'd look into more protection for presidential candidates.

9/11 conspiracy theorists may or may not be wrong, but there's no basis for it to be insulting to people that died from the attack. However, restricting the truth of the event probably would.

If you want to end terrorism it's simple : stop occupying countries. Terrorism is directly caused by occupation.
