Default Marijuana

Lets say I went to Amsterdam where it is legal to smoke weed and now I have come back and need to take a urine test for a job. How can a job discriminate against you?

more of a hypothetical situation- I went to amsterdam 2 mos ago and for someone who has only smoked twice it gets out of your system in around 10 days. But today i was presented with a drug test so I started to worry.

I know that it is dumb esp. for ppl in the US to assume that they are wrong for denying me the job based on the test, but for someone say in the UK who can fly over there for a weekend, how could a job say that you did anything wrong.

Pot smokers are not a protected class under the law. Businesses can hire any kind of people they like as long as they aren't discriminating against the very few protected classes. So they can not hire you if you smoke weed, sky dive, drive too fast/slow, or any other reason.

People in the US can't fly to Amsterdam for a weekend? More discrimination!

Why not come out and say something about it? Of course it's a risk to do it, but it's also a risk not to say anything and the test comes back positive. Come out about it up front and you can play it as a "what the hell" situation. "Hey, I just wanted to let you know, I was recently in Amsterdam where it's legal to smoke pot, and I tried it. It's the only time I've ever done it, but I wanted you to know about it in case it comes back in the test."

Most employers won't care. I told the last place in the interview process that I've tried weed before. The recruiter said "We get that answer a lot, it's not a big deal as long as it's something you don't still do." It was never an issue after that.

But that test comes back positive and you haven't said anything? You're screwed.

Wha? Way TMI for an employer, or a recruiter.
