Default Re: Sleeping in the Rio parking lot in my car?

The first time I went to Vegas, I drove there alone on a whim. I got off the freeway downtown, and the first casino I came accross was the Golden Nugget, so I parked there, and went in to try to get a room, but it was about midnight, and they didn't have a room for me until 11am. Unfortunately, after driving for about 10 hours I only had about 6 hours of poker in me (fortunately I rocked the 2/4 table for enough to pay for a cheap GN room,) so I tried sleeping for a few hours in my car. It being summer and all, I became so overheated while fading in and out of consciousness, that I felt sick for the rest of my stay. Of course this didn't stop me from playing about 12 hours of poker a day...

Sleeping in a car to save money is a horrible, horrible idea. Vegas will be hot as hell, and there is nothing more unpleasant than waking up at 7am covered in sweat in the backseat of a hot car.

I hate to admit this but I slept in a van in the bellagio parking lot a couple weeks back I left the van running with the ac on because even two weeks ago it was too hot to have it off for more than 30 min or so. I wouldn't recomend it for more than one night. if you do it dollar has vans with stow and go seating so you can put the seats down and lay flat. no one bothered me but I was only there for about 4 hr's

When I was at the WSOP in 2005 I stayed at the Gold Coast next door part of the time.
Walking over to the Rio I would pass a couple of homeless dudes sleeping in the grass next to the big parking garage there. Couple cops drove past as I was crossing the street and had to see them...but they didn't seem to care.
One of the guys had no shoes and all this green mold/fungus on his feet. Attractive!!

Anyway, it looked like crashing out there in the grass and shade was working out just fine and dandy for these guys. So I recommend doing that.

We are going to probably bring a tent and camp in the shade and buy a nice fan.

I really dont understand how you can enjoy LV w/o having a bed, an AC, and a sink/shower. It seems like staying in your car at night would make the trip suck. I dunno, maybe it depends on your car. I've got a tahoe that I took the rear seats out of, so I could lay down back there, albeit in the fetal position, and leave the car on, but wtf.

You can stay at the Frontier for about $50 a night iirc, so why not?

I don't think you realize how hot it can get in the backseat of a car. Not to mention cramped.

I actually think that having to stay in Vegas like this would make me want to leave and would effect my play.

If you over sleep you could die. Is was 115 degrees the 2nd week in July last year.

It makes more sense to sleep at the airport. I knew a guy who used to do this at LAS but it was pre-911. But I still see people sleeping in airports, and no one pays much attention. These days if you want to sleep airside, where most travelers sleep, you would need a refundable air ticket so you would have a boarding pass to allow you to clear security. Then cancel the ticket before the flight for the refund. Seems it would be a hassle to do this every day. In New Orleans the homeless I've seen just sleep landside and don't pass through security. Haven't noticed visible homeless at LAS but I haven't looked for them either. I only sleep in airports when I am legitimately traveling, but no one has objected to my pillows, blankies, and so on. And airports are cool. Sometimes a little too cold, actually. You could die of dehydration in short order in a parked car in Nevada in summer. So you really do need to get indoors if you ask me. Oh, I recommend ear plugs and eye masks for sleeping in airports. There's a website that reviews the airports and tells the best place to sleep, but I usually just try to find a gate out of the way and curl up on the floor. Can't remember if LAS has those arms on chairs to keep you from stretching out on the actual chairs, but I'm thinking, yeah, unfortunately, I think they do. So it's the floor if you can't sleep sitting up. Still better than being boiled alive in a parked car.

Also, if you give any kind of action at many of the smaller Harrah's around the country, at slots or tables, they should be mailing you coupons like crazy for free hotel rooms, how do you think they have all those old folks playing quarter slots staying free in Vegas?

I think I remember someone posting this same idea year. If someone out there in 2+2 land has the time to look thru the search function, find the guy that asked this same question last year and ask him how it went.....

My guess is that he isn't around anymore because his brain is cooked from sleeping in his car.
