My summer intern in Shanghai

El D suggests I start a thread on this, and no, I'm not in China yet. I am flying to Shanghai on the 28th this month and will be starting an internship at a family friend's VC company on July 2nd for the summer. The reason why I'm starting this thread before I even got there is because I stated that I didn't know much about the VC operation nor the business world in China. To quote ED, "Getting involved in VC in China is a really incredible opportunity for you, Chinese private equity is one of the hottest areas in finance right now."

Now I know there are some people around that have experience either in VC or with VC (First type would be Scorpion Man. Second type would be ED. There was also an awesome story by JBird in TC's success thread about dealing with VC.) So I am curious to learn more about the basics and the operation of such. The fact that I know so little about the industry shows how much of a luckbox I am having this opportunity [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]. But people also said I was a luckbox when I got into a fairly good school while sleeping in class throughout HS. So while people can tell me I'm a luckbox I am prepared to maximize my opportunity so I assume seeking help here would be great.

I don't know much about the company yet but my boss is a close family friend that I've known since I was little. I haven't seen him in almost 10 years but I met his wife last summer and she told me to call her daughter when I came to LA because she's leading a branch of Citibank in Barrington and she'll "hook it up". But that didn't go through. So around March I started looking for internships abroad and I had many "leads" from my dad so I applied to a total of four funds (My first choice was a company that was in negotiation to buy a very popular eatery/dessert place in China for $200 mil and somehow my dad was the person that connected the two sides. But the deal fell through and so was my first choice) but I ended up getting this one. From what I've read, most VCs are generally small in terms of size and I know this company is no different. I was told that I will be used primarily for researching and translating but I've also requested to be a part of a project in the second half of the duration.

Sidenote: I will be posting trip reports here once in a while. I've been to Shanghai many times (probably 7 times and 2 months at least each duration. I visit every summer when I was in Taiwan and every two summers when I'm in the States) and I would be glad to share the Eastern culture (besides Thailand) to EDF. I will also be taking a trip to Macau (hopefully) and Hong Kong for two weekends so suggestions for those would be dandy. Also if imitation somehow stumbles upon this thread maybe we can combine it into "Ask us two about living in China"

lol PJ. I was going to ask you when I get there anyways because I knew you'd love them. Last time when I was there I got the complete movie collection of Andy Lau, Chow Yun Fat and Jet Li for about $80 USD. Hopefully they'll have a director's package like the actor ones. I'll bring it back in mid-Sept if you want to wait that long or I could mail them when I'm there.

Those are actually still viable advice. I haven't been there since I encountered the knowledgeable men of 2p2 and their crazy hookers stories (aka degen, bruiser and whoever else on the list) I think even today I still will fall for the tea trick [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]. You should post some stories from when you were there in this thread! Our experiences will be much different considering that I am half of a local there, kind of.

I went to a club with couple of other kids that went back from the States when I was 15 and right when we got there three women (obv older) came up to us and asked us if we wanted to play. The other two were more mature and I was just a total n00b. I was like meh i don't really know how to play and she told me she wants to dance. I didn't know how to dance and i still don't to this day (see Alobar's link from mmtb0nes thread) so i naively asked her to teach me how to dance. She gave me a [censored] off face but apparently i looked like some big fish. She started grinding me and touching and i was like whoa damn this shizzle is hot. All of a sudden she jumps up and says wana keep playing it'll cost you 300 yuan (~$40). I'm like OH YO IS A HO I THOUGHT YOU WANTED TO PLAY WIF ME. I looked in my wallet and i had about 60 yuan and said [censored]. But i was horny as hell so i dragged her to find my friend in some kind of room that had lights. Boy, was that a mistake. I saw an old woman (who was at least 35) with crooked teeth and smeared make-up all over her face. I was like ugh i don't want to hit this shizzle so i told my friend in English don't give me money and he replied in Chinese and said I won't give you money for this and he went on about with his girl. I told this story to my dad and he lol'ed and thinks I'm a wuss.

The following story isn't nearly as baller or funny as Bruiser's, but I was laughing my ass off when I heard it from my friend. So I arrived last night around 8 PM after a 14-hour flight. I was dead tired but some of my friends that were here already decided to go on a little adventure. They went to a "karaoke bar" where you get to choose some girls to sing and dance and hopefully do other stuff too with you in a karaoke room. We were just walking around in the New Century Plaza, a place with bunch of pubs for foreigners as well as rich teenagers, when a mid-age man approached us and told us he could lead us to some cheap fun. My friends were ecstatic and said let's go but me being the pussy I am and also dead tired from the flight I kindly refused. So they went to this pretty lavish looking place and all, and had lots of fun. They even had two guys escort you to the restroom when you need to go and wait outside in case anyone wants to beef with you. They were there for couple of hours and just drank and ate (didn't get any sexual stuff) and played with the girls. When they decided to leave the bill came to about 5000 RMB, which is equivalent to about $600, or about $125 each person. My friends were shocked and all of a sudden the women just dashed for the door and entered the big scary security guards. My friends were like wtf mate i didn't even get my dick blown (It might not sound like a big deal in America but $125 is a hefty amount even in a big city like Shanghai. A waitress makes about $100 per month.) One of the richer kid just gave them his credit card and reported loss of credit card.

Also, what does everyone think of carrying around a camera? Does that just seem unbelievably tourist-y and attract the burglars/scammers?

Oh, lastly, I want to do something special that no TR/ask me threads have done. I will be taking requests to do things that you guys are curious of trying. First thing on the list is to visit Macau. My dad told me he would love to take a family trip with me and asked me if I would want to go to Xi-An to see the Terracota Army or go to Beijing since last time i was there I was 8ish, but I told him that in this heat and humidity from hell the only place i want to go is Macau.
