[ QUOTE ] Kevin Orie was the 3B. Wood had arm troubles in A Ball, so you can't blame this one on Dusty. [/ QUOTE ] You can't blame it all on Dusty, but he's one to share the blame. Considering that Prior and Zambrano also seem to have health issues and Dusty's known penchant for working his starters, he definitely contributed. [/ QUOTE ] Dusty contributed with Kerry Wood, but the problems date far, far behind the pros at any level - even Single A. In travel and select ball, his coaches made him pitch on one day's rest after throwing a complete game. They would do this every other day for the entire season. Kerry Wood was also forced to pitch back to back COMPLETE GAMES in a tournament. You read that right. |

Re: A great article on Kerry Wood
Buzz Bissinger is one of the best journalists around. He was a friend of one of my journalism professors and came and talked to our class last year. He is a really cool guy and a top notch writer, especially about sports (eg Friday Night Lights, Three Nights in August). Great read.

Was it a one-hitter, and that play was ruled a hit instead of an error or something? The only thing I remember about that game was Derek Bell swinging and missing by like 2.5 feet. The others were only missing by a foot or so. I don't recall how many hits were allowed. |

Re: A great article on Kerry Wood
I read about 1/2 that article a couple days ago and was frustrated that the author didn't analyze statistically whether throwing a lot in the minors actually prevents injuries later. I believe he mentions Maddux and Glavine havin very few injuries and that they threw a lot before getting called up, but are they players who threw a lot AND got hurt, or who remained very healthy in the majors and threw very little in the minors?

Re: A great article on Kerry Wood
It's very disappointing, but I feel much worse for the future superstars who have these injuries BEFORE they sign multi-million dollar contracts. Wood is still financially set for life if he never pitches again.

[/ QUOTE ] There was a long session that included Maddux, Glavine, Nolan Ryan, etc. about throwing more in the minors. It was also stated in the article that throwing a lot isn't as much of an issue as throwing while fatigued. |

Orie's ball was early in the game but should have been ruled an error. It was a ball hit a few steps to his left that went off the edge of his glove. Wood did hit one batter, so it would have been a no-hitter, not a perfect game. |
