Default question about burning

Step 1:Have a DVD burner
Step 2:???
Step 3:Have a DVD player that plays DVDs

I don't know how to put the files on the DVD AND have it play on a DVD. I can put them on their to store the files though and play them on the PC.

So, how does one configure video files so they can be burned and used on a DVD player?

What programs would I need (Free is prefered.)?

If it works, I thank you in advance. If it doesn't, thanks for trying and I'll be back later.
