Ignoring that little voice in your head
Here is my problem. Sometimes I am in a tough hand, and I just KNOW that I'm beat...and somehow my hand goes and clicks call anyway! It's like theres this stupid little voice in my hand telling myself that theres always a chance hes bluffing...I had this hand the other day where I basically told myself that there's almost no chance my hand is good, but I admitted to myself that I'm not a good enough player (yet) to lay these 2 pair down...
Anyway, I'm just wondering what other players do when they're faced with making a really tough laydown. Any tips or advice? Is there anything you tell yourself to make it easier? Does it ever get easier? |

Re: Ignoring that little voice in your head
I hate that guy.
Me: "I'm done with this hand if he calls, he definitely has 2PTK beat." <Villain calls bet. Turn brings flush draw, Villain pushes.> Me: "He's got a weaker second pair but picked up the flush draw and is trying to push you out. Don't let him." <Hero calls. Villain shows flopped bottom set, Hero is drawing dead.> Voice: "Moron." |

Re: Ignoring that little voice in your head
I occasionally have this problem when I massively multi-table. Sometimes in tough hands I'll put a random phantom read where an actual read should go, and because other tables are beeping at me I don't have time to talk myself out of something stupid. An easy fix is to play fewer tables and make yourself stare at the screen for 5+ seconds before making any important decisions.
If that doesn't work, just take a break. Usually this sort of thing comes from trying too hard to win rather than trying to play the best poker you can. When you're desparate to end a drought it's easy try to force things and look for spots to put your chips in that just aren't there. |

Re: Ignoring that little voice in your head
It only comes into my head preflop when I just know I am up against aces but can't get myself to lay down my kings. Then I cry. A lot.

Re: Ignoring that little voice in your head
I usually get myself in trouble with PPs. Someone is screaming higher PP, but when the flop has 3 unders, I commit myself to going broke, even tho I'm 99.9% sure I'm behind in the hand.

Re: Ignoring that little voice in your head
I call and then slap myself in the face if I was right about him having me beat.(no joke i've slapped myself in the face a lot of times the past month). I'm better at controllin my curiosity nowadays though.
I stopped making the 'i know im beat but I call anyway' calls when I got a bigger respect for money. I think that I made those calls before because I knew I could afford to buy in to the tournament another 100 times if he had me beat and in that way the buy in didn't really matter to me, and nor did the result since I obv. had a zillion other chanses to recover that tiny loss. That IS Very wrong, but I think that was the reason why I kept making those calls. |

I've noticed lately that when I'm beat, that voice kicks in just before the showdown "you know you're beat."

Re: Ignoring that little voice in your head
The voice in my head has been a big problem lately.
"He raised in the CO/HJ/BTN? He's on a steal! You've got 12-17BB! All in any two cards!" |
