i'm intregued by this fungus thing. I know the whole, banana's a herb, tomato's a fruit etc etc crap, and i also vaguely recall that fungi are wierd-ass lifeforms with sixtuple chromasomes and some such, but surely saying a mushroom is a fungus is like saying an apple is a tree? Is a mushroom not the seed carrying bit of a fungus and hence probably a fruit?

Yeah, fungi aren't even plants. In fact, according to Wikipedia:

"Fungi are now thought to be more closely related to animals than to plants, and are placed with animals in the monophyletic group of opisthokonts."
