any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! most on this forum have/will travel there someday so i hope this thread will be interesting to more than just me.

you're not gonna find high stakes poker, except in Paris at the ACF. the Monte Carlo casino does not offer poker at all, iirc.

in fact avoid Monte Carlo totally, it sucks.

I'm thinking about a trip there as well, and have a good friend from Paris. she basically says on the coast, Cassis is a 'romantic' place. a couple other more fun/studenty places are Cap d'adge, Port Barcares, and St. Raphael, near St. Tropez. Corsica is a step up, is very nice.

I've spent some time in the region around Avignon. Not sure how much golf or poker you're going to find. IMO, by far the best way to see this part of the world is on a bicycle. All of the farm roads that in the USA would be dirt, are nice and paved in France. Also, the max distance between villages is like 5 miles so you can always find a place to sleep. When I was there the weather and scenery were fantastic. I know if you do some google searching you will find lots of nature places and cool things like thousands year old Roman aquaducts.

the only golf i have lined up is Barbaroux GC in Brignoles. golf digest has it as 64th best course in the world...im suprised there is no poker....guess ill be eating and drinking alot...any specific recommendations? ill be driving from barcelona to ??? 14 days to putter around.

I found the food in Monte carlo awful. Dont know if represents the rest of france well though, but me and a friend of mine tried alot of different restaurants there, and it was completely tasteless. Even the more expensive stuff.

If french food is like that in general, i hope you like wine. =)

Don't have much to add except that I was recently in Aix and it's beautiful and the food is awesome.

If you are travelling through the Loire Les Bordes is supposed to be awesome, one of the best in Europe.
