Default Casino withholding 25% since I\'m Canadian

I hope this is the right forum to post this in. I won a tournament at the Rio and they withheld 25% of my win because I'm Canadian. I approached a company called Refund Management Services about getting my money back, and found out that RMS charges a 25% fee as well. Can someone tell me how easy it would be to get this refund myself? Or should I just bite the bullet and use RMS.

If your're going to lose 25% regardless, it is worth your time? I guess it is just a matter of principle.

I would shop around for a cheaper refund service. If there is none I'd let it go.

LOL.

Just maybe, the service was quoting a charge of 25% of the amount witheld ?

OP, call the IRS. There is likely a FREE form to fill out and file for FREE.

You could find someone cheaper I'm sure...depending on what amount the 25% is off of. But it's a relatively easy process. All you're doing is basically filing a US tax return. You need to get a taxpayer identification number first then do the return. There's likely a local accountant that would do it for you for I would think less than $200. Or you could spend an evening or two and read through the US IRS info and just do it yourself.

Sorry, I meant that the company would charge 25% OF THE AMOUNT WITHHELD. Which I still think is ridiculous...
