Let me save you a lot of heartache and tell you that the answer is bet. Checking risks a free showdown against ace high, which is the hand your opponent has the vast majority of the time. If your opponent actually holds a pair, then he's passive, and the river flush arriving might scare him into checking again. If he has the flush, betting is best again. Clear bet.

Now let me make you even more money and tell you that out of position, you do much better to play your hand fast in general, and definitely here. If your opponent has ace high, a flop c/r and lead likely wins an extra 1.5 BB. If he has an overpair, you crush him when you get to 3-bet the turn, again making an extra 1.5 BB over the check-call / check-raise line. The only time your line is best is when your opponent will bet until you raise and then shut down. You see players like that, but not as often any more.

The key to the whole thing is to recognize that by calling the flop, you are risking the extra 1 SB you could get by raising and the 1 BB from your turn lead in an attempt to win 2 BB total with the turn c/r. That's risking 1.5 to win 2, so you have to be really sure it's going to work and will win the most. You can rarely be this sure.

So... play your hand fast out of position. Save the slowplays for the times you act last, so you can at least ensure that 1 bet goes in when your opponent gets scared on the turn.

Eric makes some good points, out of position you want to play big pocket pairs such as AA or KK very fast and slow down when you encounter heavy resistance. Heads up you should either re-reaise preflop or raise him on the flop. If he happens to hit a Q on the thurn with AQ or something and you bet out you could get a chance for a three-bet opportunity if he decides to raise. Slowplays in limit aren't very profitable heads up and your best bet is to play anything good fast.
