Default Keeping pot small vs giving a free card

I have already posted this in response to the hand in the link posted by fight club, but i thought i would make a new post to get some more discussion/answers.

Link

In this thread there a mixed responses about whether to check the turn or bet the turn and i was confused and posted the following.

Im interested in peoples thoughts on this hand in regards to checking the turn. the argument is that checking enables you to keep the pot small however the downside to this is your giving a free card.

Before i converted to NL i played limit and i always was under the impression that giving a free card was an absolute sin, and that it rarely if ever be done. Theory of poker says when your opponent makes mistakes you profit, so if your opponent here has a flush draw and you give him a free card you made the mistake so if you always played this hand the same you would lose money (i think because you give him correct odds to chase his flush)

Now in terms of the keeping the pot small thing because im new to NL i actually dont know much about this as im still learning. However im not believing that keeping the pot small should be more of a priority than avoiding giving a free card.

I suppose im rambling but what im saying is, is making this pot big by betting the turn a bigger mistake then giving your opponent a free card?

Care to discuss?
I will repost the hand here aswell. Thanks
