Wow, they made a film of The Mist? Never even heard it was coming. Great novella for sure, hope the film lives up to it.

CDS, that ending sounds terrible. I won't be seeing this movie. I'm so disappointed because I loved the story and it sounds like the movie came close to being amazing.

Uh no...lol
The ending is almost enough to completly ruin the entire movie.

Its one of the most awful creative descions of all time.

Can you post in white how it ends? I have no intention of seeing it.

they drive and drive until the car runs out of gas while they are still in the mist. They realize they are screwed and TJane pulls out the gun but it only has 4 bullets left. So Jane says he will figure out something to do given there is no 5th bullet. So they kidn of all agree to let Jane kill them/commit suicide. His son wakes up and looks at his dad in horror and then you hear 4 shots and cut to Jane in car crying and screaming and banging [censored]...they are all dead obv. He then gets out of car screaming at mist..come and get me u bastards etc. You hear groans etc that the monsters make in the mist...he keeps yelling..etc but nothing kills him. then out of the mist comes the monster to kill him...cept he realizes its an army tank with soldiers behind it. Then like in a split second the mist is gone and he see the dudes flamethrowing [censored] like the spiders n stuff..and he falls to his knees screaming at the sky as two soldiers look on in gas masks like "why is the dude screaming at the sky". the end. Also as all this is happeneing he sees a car go by and in it is the woman who in the beginning of the movie is the first person to go out in the mist cuz she left her daughter at home and sometimes the babysitter forgets to look after her blah blah blah. The one no one has the guts to escort home.

It actually wouldnt have been as awful and ending if it just ended with Jane walking and disapearing into the mist...but the whole Army showing up right after he assistants in the suicide of everyone including his son..plus the mist just vanishes when the army shows up....very very very dumb.

I heard about this ending when they started shooting and I was incredibly pissed he choose to do this, and I know I will love the movie as I loved the novella, but I know this ending is just going to [censored] all over that good feeling the movie will build up.

Funny thing is, Stephen King loved the ending Darabont chose to go with and was saying if he thought of it before he would have ended the novella version that way. Sigh. I hate major story issues like this that come to pass when all it hinges on is waiting 5 minutes, especially when the short story ended about as well as it could have.

Harry Knowles at Aintitcoolnews.com gave it a big thumbs up - and given the reviewer, that's a hell of a compliment.

I haven't read the book, but based on Harry's review and the trailer it looks like a Stephen King take of "Night of the Living Dead" - innerestin.

[/ QUOTE ]

Take his reviews with a grain of salt. Seriously.

And yeah Stephen King was essentially trying to come up with his own version of Night of the Living dead when he was writing the story (his words).

Can someone please refresh my memory as to how the book ends? I haven't read it in years and have totally blanked out on it.

Then why wouldn't you go see it? "Close to amazing" sounds pretty good to me. At times I can even work with "decidedly mediocre". I guess if you only see 2 or 3 films a year you can wait around for amazing but if you've been geared up for this one why wouldn't you go and make up your own mind.

Even the questionable CDS states the movie is pretty damn good until the last 5.

I'll definitely check it out. It sucks when a lame ending takes you out of the movie but if the rest of the film was strong I can usually, in time, look back with some reverence.

You're pretty much forced to that attitude by horror movies anyway. It's incredibly rare that one gets everything right.

True. I've been a horror movie fan since I was a kid. It's probably the most difficult genre to get right since there are rules and limits to the style - so you kind of take what you can get. Horror buffs tend to get excited with anything slightly above average. I enjoyed the first half of 1408 before it went over the top and became to big for the story but whatever... I'll take it. You're forced to make allowances in horror films that your probably wouldn't in other genres.

Yeah, stuff that would destroy other movies is usually just accepted in horror flicks. More than other genres, horror flicks tend to be built around doing just a few key moments well and creating an atmosphere. Do that well and almost anything else can be forgiven.

Horror remains a genre where the best work is most often done by indies and little studios - in the main, Hollywood wrecks it.

Give me Bad Taste, Dog Soldiers, Evil Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, hell even Frailty over any Hollywood Horror*

(* except The Exorcist, and Psycho)
