Default Re: What is a \"holla\" ?

Thanks for all the help. I think I got it now. Holla. (?)

I checked with wikipedia, and this is what they had to say:

Holla may refer to an informal greeting popular among those in the Hip Hop subculture. Often used by Tim Westwood & Ramon Vega.

Can often be a popular word used by Chavs.

It may also refer to the following geographical locations:

Holla in Sør-Trøndelag, Norway.
Holla in Telemark, Norway.
"Holla," a song by Ghostface Killah from his album The Pretty Toney Album

Just had another word which needed to be defined for me, but didn't want to start another thread.... what does it mean to "float the flop?"

Thanks

A float is when you call the flop with a weak handintending to take the pot away later.

Not to date myself, but "Holla" isn't even particularly new.

The year was 1989, the artist "Tone Loc" and the song "Wild Thing", the lyric:

[ QUOTE ]
We was all alone and she said "Tone let me tell you one thing
I need $50 to make you holler I get paid to do the wild thing"

[/ QUOTE ]

Ahh yes, the days when you could be made to holla for $50... You kids, you don't know how good we had it back then!

I think it comes from the old west or something. I swear I once heard it used on an episode of Deadwood on HBO.

'holler at me later' or ill 'holler at you about it' has probably been used forever, even in the south, which is where the deadwood thing comes from. 'holla' has probably been around since rap became more mainstream. i think its hilarious still. holla
