The clear answer is to go back and offer to be the bank (i.e. you are the only person who touches cash / chips when people buy in or cash out)

when I played in home cash games there was a policy regarding a short bank, everyone knew about it before the game began.

in one the big winner took the full reduction, in another all winners took a proportional cutback.

There should be one player in charge of the money and they should take responsibility if the pot is short or someone's playing on credit. Anything else is chaos.

yeah, one person in charge is the only way to do it, otherwise you can have players rebuying chips but not putting money in.

No, it isn't. Either bank the game or walk away- sticking one winner with the entire shortage is unfair, unless it was a house rule... and if so, it's a BAD house rule.

You really come off like a wimp who's scared he will look bad.

They weren't your friends in the first place.
2nd thing you won 500$ from your so called "friends". You had it coming to ya.

Your line of action:
Grow some self-esteem.
