Manque, Fwiw, I own the Jaeger-Lecoultre Master Control in 18k yellow gold, brown alligator band and I really like it. Sometimes, I think “Wtf did I spend the money on this thing?” Then I wear it. No regrets. RJT [/ QUOTE ] Were there other watches you were considering? If so what made you choose the Master Control? |

As of now, I can see paying some kind of premium just so you don't look like a clown. It just seems weird you'd have to do that. [/ QUOTE ] From everything I've read (I have no personal experience though) If you want a simple, elegant watch at a reasonable price, your best bet is to go vintage. |

Re: Watches
I vote for the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control, silver, with a black, leather band. The only other watch which I like better (but out of this price range) is the A.Lange & Sohne 1815:

Re: Watches
I don't know if the prices of these watches vary based on the price of precious metals or exchange rates (as these are hand-made in Germany). About two years ago, the particular versions of these (platinum, I think) that I saw in Europe were going for ~18k euro.
I never understood why watchmakers never made a cheaper version (say for $500) that are similar in aesthetics but with poorer components and craftsmanship. |

[/ QUOTE ]Same reason BMW doesn't make a $10k car. Because they don't want to "ruin" their brand name with a "bargain" label. One of the reasons one would buy an A. Lange & Sohne watch is to show that you can afford a $15k watch. If people couldn't tell if you were wearing the $15k version or the $500 version, fewer people would buy the $15k version. |

Re: Watches
To be clearer... for men's watches, I think there are distinct differences in terms of the aesthetic quality of $500 vs. $1500 vs. $5k vs. $15k watches. Why isn't there a watchmaker who makes a watch that could pass for a $15k watch (that's not a rip-off) but costs $500?
