Nevada - most dangerous state in the U.S!!??

Those who are figuring out that such a huge percentage of Nevada's population is confined to just 2 cities whereas other states have a larger population to 'even out' the numbers are exactly right imo.

St. Louis and East St. Louis have pretty dangerous areas. But the rest of Missouri and Illinois brings down the overall 'dangerous' statistic for the whole state.


Also, as mentioned earlier, St. Louis and Washington D.C. are not states. At least I'm pretty sure they aren't anyway.

This Canadian just understands statistics. What're the chances of dying from a terrorist attack in the US? Well, the only major events we have are 9/11 and OKC. 2000 folks perished in the last ~15 years that terrorism has been a major threat. Compare that to how many folks have died from violence or drunk drivers.

He's right...When visiting the US his chances of dying at the hands of some random American are much higher than the chances of dying from an act of terrorism. 'Course it works the other way, too. FAR more US citizens die at the hands of Canadians every year than die from acts of terrorism while visiting Canada.

Basically it's a nearly meaningless statement. Perhaps he was trying to make a statement about violence in the US, but mostly he ended up making a statement about the lack of terrorism in the US.

As for bailing out the families... uhhhh...we have this odd notion here in the US that family members are not responsible for the actions of others in their family. I am not by brother's keeper. Perhaps they do things differently in Canadia? If I kill someone in Canadia, do y'all jail my siblings and my parents, too?

a few random thoughts:

I recall reading a few months back that rates of violent crime in the UK and some other European countries are higher than the USA.

If you round out the 9-11 victims to 3,000 and our population to 300,000,000, then 1 in 100,000 Americans was killed on 9-11. That's not "one in a billion."

Have you actually looked at Canada's immigration policy? It seems Canada is letting in anyone who says “please,” regardless of what support for terrorism/Islamofacism they have.

Many Canadians recoil at our gun rights here. At least I still have the right to defend myself from attack in most jurisdictions here by using a handgun. I guess in Canada, as long as the attacker(s) has the upper hand, it would be better for the resident there to die or be raped or whatever than for him (her) to be able to defend himself with a common defense tool. The handgun can equalize the situation so that the predators won’t be in a situation where they know that they will always have the upper hand.

Oh by the way, Canada has been able to have an increasingly smaller amount of GDP spent on national defense because they could depend on what we’re spending on defense. It directly benefits your standard of living.

The UK is one of the worst countries in the developed world for theft but the US has been the undisputed #1 for murders in the developed world for many decades.

Yeah I think you area right. I live in Los Angeles and visit Vegas once a month and have done so for the past 7-8 years. I have been in the very worst parts of both cities, as well as the middle class areas, the blue collar areas, and the nice areas. By far Los Angeles is more dangerous.
The reasons are:

1.) The worst areas are equally as dangerous. But the worst area of Los Angeles is huge. This is roughly the area bounded by the 10 Fwy to the north, the city limits to the east, ~La Brea Bl to the west, and the 105 fwy to the south. By contrast, the worst parts of N. Las Vegas is primarily confined to individual apartment complexes and does not spill out several miles. The area ~ behind the Sahara down to Maryland is not that large an area.

2.) Many middle class and lower middle class/blue collar areas of Los Angeles are also filled with crime. Places like Van Nuys, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Gardena, Canoga Park, Reseda, Chatsworth, Echo Park, Silver Lake, Arleta, North Hollywood, Hollywood, etc are very crime ridden areas despite very expensive housing. There is enough crime and graffitti in these areas that people do not tend to walk the streets at night except in very commercial locations. While there are occasional shootings, most of the crime is theft type crimes. This same type of thing tends not to be true of Vegas. The lower middle class areas I have stayed tend to be VERY quiet and undisturbed. The areas I have stayed are N. Las Vegas near Lake Mead and I forget [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img], and also not far from Sams Town. Actually, that place was kinda crappy. But no real trouble there from what I could see.
