What is a "friend zone" and why does it exist?

First post in OOT, pls be gentle.

I always hear about the dangers of slipping into the "friend zone" when you first meet a girl and start to spend time with her. What's up with that? I mean, I don't care if I've been friends with a girl for 10 years, if I think she's hot and obviously we can stand being around each other, why are they creating this artificial obstacle?

I do understand the feeling like "well we always hang out together, you're friends with my friends, I'm friends with your friends, how the heck would this work out if we had a messy breakup", but to that I say:

It's so girls can feel better about themselves, garner attention and string someone along as a back up, obviously.

I think it needs to be discussed why straight males are friends with girls in the first place.

I find it pointless to be "friends" with a girl, especially if you're attracted to her.

its not an artificial obstacle, just because you think she is hot doesnt mean [censored]. She is not attracted to you, so youll be nothing more than friends.

here in south carolina, people don't date someone unless they think they could marry them

when there's no casual dating you gotta be friends with girls or else everything you do will be a sausage fest

For example purposes assume single people.

Boys will have sex at any time with any girl they find hot. (and take away fatties and you can revise this to say Boys will have sex at any time with any girl)

Girls do not follow this same behavior.

I like the company of my girl friends sometimes more than my guy friends. You can learn a lot from chicks, they arent just skin around a vagina like some people lead you to believe.
