Depending upon which part of the state you're in and if they pass table games outside of Charleston, WV on Saturday, you could be 4.5 hrs or so away (if you're in say Charlotte). Still not great but better than 12.

I hoping for it to pass so I'll only be about 2.5 hrs away. Though this is all assuming they end up running a good poker room and are able to spread mid-limit games (I don't play much no limit).

Very sorry to let you know that the referendum was voted down in June. It will be another two years before they can get it put back on the ballot. It passed in at least two other places in WV though, none close, but hopefully that will add pressure or influence in a couple years when they try again. I was really, really, really looking forward to a casino setting closer to me than the 3 hour AC drive. I was doing some research and apparently it took AC several tries on the referendums to pass gambling there back in the day too.

"Jefferson County - Charles Town (Charlestown Races & slots):
Failed 5,626 to 4,429.

Speculation is that the referendum failed mostly because of proposed budget allocations. Proponents have stated that they will revisit the budget and seek
another referendum."

At Cherokee in the mountains. It is a nice "Indian" casino, but the rake was ridiculous. I don't remember the exact rake, as I was there about 5 years ago. I just remember thinking there was no way I was going to play there.

Actually, that's CHARLES TOWN, WV. Which is different than the capital which is Charleston, WV. There is one remaining county to vote in West Virginia. The county is Kanawha County which Charleston sits in I believe. The actual casino is about 15 miles west of Charleston. It's called Tri-State Racetrack & Gaming Center. They did not vote with everybody else because of some procedural problems. They decided to postpone the vote until August 11th. The economic situation is a little worse there than in Charles Town so hopefully it will pass.

right, that's the one that was remaining in WV that I was referring too.

This casino could potentially do quite decently if they pass table-games because of the aforementioned total lack of options if you're in the far east part ofthe southeast.

I suspect a lot of NC and eastern Tenn types would be making this trek to the relative boonies of WV.
Of course, it would be up to the racetrack/casino to make it reasonably attractive.

Semi on-topic -- regarding map distance algorithms, my first trip to Tunica I used the Motel 6 finder which put me in Helena, Arkansas, which it said was about 18 miles from Tunica. I ended up at least 50 miles from the casinos!

Problem #1: I used Tunica, not Tunica Resorts or Robinsonville, 14 miles north.

Problem #2: Their algorithm appeared to give distances "as the crow flies," i.e. assuming I could helicopter over the Mississippi River instead of driving 20 miles south for the nearest bridge.

Needless to say I learned an important lesson about trusting online distance finders. Cheapskates only gave me a $10 coupon for my troubles.

What is the state of poker in FL now? They just allowed like 1/2 NL but only at dogtracks with a max buy-in or something like that?

I live in NC. Is there any B&M poker room even remotely close by, or am I in basically the worst location in the US?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes and not so bad. It depends on where you are in NC. If your in Charlotte or close to the SC border, your only one state away from poker in Florida now. I'm sure there's a dog track or Seminole Casino close to Jacksonville.

Also....I used to make the drive to Tunica several times a year from East TN until we got a low fair direct flight to Vegas. Figure in gas for an SUV and drive time vs a cheap flight and 4hrs in the air and it's a no-brainer. I know Raleigh has Southwest, and if your in Western NC close to Asheville you can take Allegiant from Greenville/Spartanburg.

I like in Charlotte. It is not close to Florida. I drive to miami about 3-4 times per year and FL is 5 hours away (and i usually drive~90-100) and another 5 hrs to mismi. Quickest time to miami was 10 hrs and 20 mins including food, gas, and bathroom stops. its ~760 miles.

As for card rooms, ya, its terrible. The casino in the mountains (Harrahs cherokee) does not spread table games which makes them useless. They claim to be getting approved and expanding but no official word yet. Never driven to AC. Got a flight sunday to vegas, and it will be my first trip there. Where do you live in NC?

I live in W-S. And this quote from the Harrah's Cherokee website put me on lifetilt.[ QUOTE ]
It's all the fun of poker but at a table for one. Try our video poker slots if you want a twist on this increasingly popular game. And with multiple denominations, there's sure to be one that matches your style of play. Let Harrah's Cherokee deal you a winning hand!
