Default Madrid: One Night

Due to a flight getting cancelled tonight I will have a one night lay over in Madrid. From 20:15 to 9:30 to be exact.

Any advice on what I should do for a night? What do I need to see? Any advice for an excellent restaurant that I should eat at? Touristy things to see at night are welcome but really fun, interesting, things to do are preferred.

There is this really cool place called La Plaza Mayor in Salamanca district. Tons of people around, plenty of decent restaurants, bars, etc. You should be aware that people only just start going out at like 9:00PM in Spain so plan to start your dinner at like 9-9:30.

From La Plaza Mayor you can walk around and check out some really nice old cathedrals or try to meet some spanish people (or tourists) at the plaza.

Imagine that this is a big square, all lit up, and full of people at night:

Here's the cathedral (its huge and theres another one too):

La Plaza Mayor is good idea. The square itself is cool and the area around it is nice to walk around in and maybe have a beer at a bar. I would recommend this restaurant just of La Plaza Mayor: http://www.gomadrid.com/rest/madrid-restaurants.html

As Jablue mentions be aware that the locals are having dinner pretty late.
