I bet I have lost $400 worth of lighters over the years. I've come to find out a buddy's wife regularly steals lighters and has a massive stash at home. I suspect there are many lighter kleptos.

when i was in 8th grade i went to go smoke for the first time ever with a couple buddies in the woods by our middle school during the summer. leave my bike at the bottom of the hill, go up and get settled in a chill spot. literally smoke 12 bowls of schwag out of a wooden pipe my friend made in wood class. absolutely out of my mind, we hear a guy yelling something at the bottom of the hill, as he gets closer we can hear him "I KNOW WHAT YOU KIDS ARE DOING I'M CALLING THE COPS" just our luck, some sort of kindergarten dance function was being held that night at the middle school.

we absolutely book it up the woods into a golf course, never stopping once, running probably a mile and a half to my house. we get there completely out of breath and i realize [censored], i just left my brand new $450 GT chrome racing bike at the bottom of the hill.

i abandon my friends who were just laughing hysterically at me. run all the way back to the middle school, enter the building. this was so surreal i can not even explain. there are a few parents sitting at a desk right in front of me. i look at them, look to my left where out of the corner of my eye i see a bike. the bathroom door is open, with my bike perfectly placed in the back of the bathroom. the same guy says "the cops are on their way" or something like that, and i just book it out of there.

i waited 2 weeks to report my bike stolen and ended up getting to look in the police station for it and also being escorted around town by a cop looking at various "police garage" locations. obviously never found it. this tilts me to this day whenever i think about it, because this bike was absolutely sick, and also because i probably couldn't have handled the situation any worse.

although probably stolen, i could have lost an ipod as well.

left my ti-89 calculator sitting on a table in a library type place at school. Left the room for a few minutes and when I came back it was replaced with a ti-83. I kept it for a week or so but was pissed and lost it anyway, now i use a ti-12 or something and it barely adds.

Lost my Grad Ring and left my sunglasses in the Bahamas. Probably similar value.
Also not for much money, but I bought a USB numpad. Ripped it upon and lost the USB, still haven't found it. I lose a lot of stuff, but have never lost something in the process of opening it.

maybe not the most expensive thing, but the dumbest way i ever lost something is this: I went to gas station, and then paid for gas. I then walked slowly back to my car and thought about things that amused me ( I'm assuming i was thinking about that at least) I then got in my car and drove away. About 10 minutes later I realized that I needed gas. At which point I was like "[censored], FCCKINN IDIOT, I just drove off without filling up my tank." I then went back to the gas station, and discovered that someone had filled up their car without my gas ( They run good)
