Any 7, maybe any 3...

I'd imagine he's leading the flop with a J or a frush draw

This hand came from a 10-20 full game at Motor City Casino, but im posting it here cuz this is where I usually post. My image at the time was tight/straight foward.

I had 8s6s on the BTN. One mediocre/passive limps from middle position and a horrible/passive player limps in the CO. I call on the button with my monster hand. The SB folds and the BB, who is a pro, checks. So we're 4 handed for 4.5 small bets

The flop comes out Js 7s 3d, giving me an 8-high flush draw. The pro checks, the two fish check, and I bet. To my surprise the pro now raises and both fish fold.

Now heres the Quiz:

1. What is the pro's most likely hand?

2. Given the nature of the pro's hand what is my best strategy on the flop+turn? When giving your answer for the turn play, please give a corresponding strategy for every turn card if necessary.

I will give what I think are the correct answers to this quiz in roughly 8hours.

he has a 7. 3 bet the flop and keep firing if you think he is capable of folding his 7. post this where it belongs.

Seriously though, I think this quiz applies to all forms of poker so I think it'll do just fine here.

--blind--

1)its unlikely for the pro to have a draw here since he would have called, and its also unlikely for him to have top pair since he may have led out. If he percieves you as tight and capable of making big postflop folds he could have any medium split pair, a naked ace with maybe a backdoor draw, a weak pocket pair, and a bluffy flush draw that has no showdown value.

2)since villain's range is relatively weak/drawy and he percieves you as tight, it makes sense to think about making a move on the turn.

If villain leads the turn I'd tend to raise:
any A-Q - to rep improvement and induce a fold,
any J - ditto but because he's unlikely to hold a J,
any 9 or T - since i picked up 4 more outs
any 6 or 8 - since I picked up 5 more outs
any spade - because my flush is still vulnerable to one-card redraws that will not pay off on the river but will pay one more here

I'll call the rest.

If he checks I'll check through everything but spades, sixes, and eights.
----

on the river, if I didn't raise the turn -
i'll raise any flush
fold most else,
call an 8,
and i should probably bluff the aces and jacks.

---------

and this is why a pro would eat me alive.

I thought of a weak J, but others disagree. In any case, I'd raise a K or A turn (bet if checked to) and just check/call otherwise. Also, just call the flop. I see no reason to raise because it just ties him to his hand/bloats the pot.

I'm assuming he can hand read a bit. I think the problem with raising the turn is that you've played your hand like it's weak, and now you're going to represent AJ or better? I don't think he's folding to a turn raise. Best chance to make him fold is to 3bet the flop and bet the turn when he checks to you. If you don't think that's going to happen, take the free card.
