I'll throw in a vote for George Washington as a good leader for a number of reasons, but chiefly because he had the opportunity to secure more power for his position but instead tried to limit the power of his own post. Not many politicians or leaders can say that.

Actually, I think Hitler was a terrible leader and made huge mistakes that lost the war before it even started. That said, you are probably right about the thread.

Just US? If so, from the 20th century only, and in no particular order:

Ronald Reagan, Malcolm X, MLK, FDR, Miles Davis, Jackson Pollack, Ernest Hemingway, John Lennon, David Hackworth, Billy Mitchell, Frank Lloyd Wright, Stephen Hawking, and Salma Hayek.


All of these people have demonstrated the courage of their convictions and have effected tremendous influence on their respective fields.

I couldn't agree more. What an amazing person. The country was throwing itself at his feet and, instead of what so many would do, he served and then stepped aside.

"Great leader" is terribly vague and subjective. You could just as easily say that Hitler was terrible at making good decisions, but since he did a great job of making people follow him, he was a great leader.
