Thats not what i was thinking about Casinor. French are not bad at English because they don't want to speak with strangers like you seems to think. It's just the English taught at school is very basic, and most of the people will never speak again English after school (no occasions) thus being even worse with this language.

[2+2 is a good training for me regarding this point]

The Dutch can speak English but LOVE making you speak Dutch so they can pretend not to understand your crap skillz. Germans are fine. Austrians are evil. French are lazy. I'm 29.

So let le say you something...
First you have to know that the german or dutch language are closer from English that french, you can compare us to italian or spanish and I am sure you'll say the same thing about them, because our language comes from Latin.
You should stop thinking that, by your status of american people, you are the kings of the world.
And don't think that all french are the same as we don't think that all american people are fat stupid or racist...

Don't take it too seriously. I was just teasing French people. I am not American. I am from Holland. About Italians, I have heard that they learn English in school from a very young age. I still think that at least to some extent, Frenchmen don't speak a lot of foreign languages, because of their pride.

I'm one of the rare french who speaks almost fluent english. And I read books in English.
But I don't get why you expect someone who's native language is not English to read books in English and be able to give directions in English to american tourists. French people don't know English any better than Americans know their second language. What's your second language? Do you read books in that language on a regular basis? Or do you wait for a translation?
When I ask directions in an american city, I don't expect people to know french or german or spanish.

French suck at foreign languages as much as americans, nothing more

My second language is German. I like reading German. My favorite's are Till Eulenspiegel and Faust. Even give me some Biederman and die Brandstifter. I've read all the good German poker books too.

BTW, when I was in Germany, and when I was fluent but with a nice American accent, I would ask a question when I was out and about. I'd say 80% of the time they would answer me in English. I never have the balls to do the same here.

well you must be among the americans who are the best at a foreign language. And I wish more of the french would speak a second language fluently, but our education system sucks for that. Even our english teachers suck at english... Being able to read in multiple languages is awesome btw.

Our French publisher is also our German Publisher, and the first German book is out. Unfortunately, there is a Maginot Line between depts so while there is a Vichy editor, there is going to be a four year wait.
