They run it up and resell it. I got my start on Stars this way, back when the exchange rate was about $20/mill and the 40k or fold games were actually worth 3-tabling.

Ultimately someone is buying play chips just to have play chips.

Not everyone can "run it up and resell it", so why would anyone ever buy play chips?

Because even play chips have value.

Somewhat similarly, items from games like World of Warcraft sell for real money. People gain satisfaction out of having 10million play chips, and people gain satisfaction from having pretty armour in the game.

All "things" have value of some sort. Traditionally, western capitalist society expresses value in the form of money, primarily since it is easier to exchange money than Uluru Sea Shells, for example.
