The Brothers Karamozov, Doetoeskvy <sp?>
Don't let the length fool you, and this book itsn't as hard to understand as other great 'classics' (Crime and Punishment, Dubliners, etc.). It's a surprisingly readable, provocative, and deep story that reveals in complete clarity the various heights and depths of human emotion. I've never met ANYONE who's read this book and did not consider it one of their all-time favorites </reading rainbow>

War and Peace needs to be on this list. It's really amazing.

thread needs some g g marquez imo.
i would say love in the time of cholera but 100 years of solitude is also fantastic. hard to go wrong with him. i really, really love for whom the bell tolls. that book just dominated my whole mindset after i read it. read more elliot than just prufrock, the hollow men and the waste land are also must-read imo. i'm pretty sure it is largely ignored or considered passe at this point, but howl is a stunningly beautiful and moving love poem. people who read the first part only don't realize this. the last few stanzas of this poem give me chills just thinking about them. also, the sound and the fury is another book that some people like to crap on these days, but i think it's fantastic.

I'd put Plato's Gorgias dialogue on the list. It's simply amazing that it was written 2500 years ago, and we are still dealing with the same problems.
