Default Hi all, new to 2+2, and question on \"online play and good NLHE books

Hi all, I am new to 2+2 and just wanted to pop bye and say hello. I am 18 years old and have been playing poker in my home town of Australia for roughly 2 years. Having just come of age i have now began to play online and casino, of which my downfall seems to be online.

I do quite well at the 2/3 tables at the casino but foten struggle at home and always seem to lose my roll, even though im happy with my play. Does anyone have some tips for online play, preventing the boredom, and ultimately building a healthy bankroll. I just cant seem to get it off the ground, but will find my self up 500 from the casino after a night of 2/3 :S....

Also i have access to quite a list of poker books but am not sure on a good read, for low limit cash games, and MTT play.

Thank you for listening and looking forward to posting here on this great site

Glyn.

Hi. Where are you from in Oz?

To prevent boredom when playing online, increase the number of tables you're playing until your time is fully occupied.

The Bible for cash NL is "No Limit Holdem: Theory And Practice" by Sklansky and Miller. I haven't read any books in the same league on MTTs, but some people like the Harrington on Holdem series and the new Lee Nelson book "Kill Everyone" is getting good reviews.

Welcome to the forums

To add to the above recommendations, I'd get:

Professional No-Limit Hold'em, by Flynn, Mehta and Miller

No-Limit Texas Hold'em, by Angel Largay

The Little Green Book, by Phil Gordon

Hey Glyn,

-Add Theory of Poker (Sklansky) to the shopping list,
-Check out the sticky posts in basically every subforum that's poker-related, even if you never play NL, Razz or Full Ring, if it's stickied it'll help your game. You'll find a few weeks worth of reading there; start with Pokey and Fimbulwinter's posts. I found this forum when I just started out, and thanks to these 2 guys alone I was able to turn my lousy 50 USD first deposit into 1K.
-If you want a break from reading then stuff like MTT Live PXF Directory is huge.

Hope this helped you a bit, and gl at the tables.

The first step toward building a healthy bankroll is to become a winning player. Most players lose, including most players who think they are good players. If you are a losing player, you should set a budget, and have fun within that budget, but you can't expect to build a bankroll.

Online games are generally much tougher than live games for the same stakes. People don't go to a casino to fold, so they play a lot of losing hands, which makes it easy to win money, at least before the rake. If you beat the lowest stakes live games, with a $2 or $3 big blind, that may mean you can beat the lowest stakes online games, with a $0.02 big blind. It's generally very expensive to think of yourself as a NL $100 player because you beat live games at those stakes, and then insist on playing NL $100 online. Expect to have to move down a lot. The good news is that you get a lot more hands per hour online (particularly if you play multitple tables), the rake is lower, and learning to play without relying on physical reads will improve your fundamental skills a lot.

Second, and it is a very distant second, to avoid redepositing once you have a winning track record in some level online, you should exercise some form of rational bankroll management. See this post.

As for books, ones from 2+2 are generally good. Make sure that you are getting books related to NL. Not long ago, there were very few NL ring games. Books didn't even have to mention that they were about limit hold'em instead of NL. If you get a book on limit, you will probably be disappointed, even if it is very good for limit and a few of the ideas carry over.

Being new to poker. The books that have helped me the most have been:
Making the Final Table- Erick Lindgren
Harrington on Holdem Vol 1&2- Dan Harrington.

I've read @dozen books in the month and half I've been playing Holdem and most were not helpful at all, but these should get you started on your way to winning.
