Check raising the flop is much better than waiting for the turn. You'll get called on the river a lot more.

I always c/r flop with top pair, because I c/r this flop with big diamonds, so I need the balance.

I c/r the flop in case he has a better diamond. If he has a set or better king, chances are you have a good draw to two pair or a flush.
