Default Should I feel like a jerk?

So I went to a local sports bar to watch UFC 77 ($10 cover rather than paying $40 to get the PPV). Yes, I am aware that I could steal it on the internets.

I haven't shaved in a couple of days, am wearing a Harley Davidson t-shirt and a baseball cap. My skin is dark enough that at the local tacquerias they will occasionally ask me for my order in Spanish. I used to work in one, and my restaurant spanish is good enough to place an order, but then when they try to keep talking to me in spanish I end up telling them that I don't really speak any spanish.

I'm sitting at a table by myself next to a table of Mexicans. The guy next to me asks me what I think about one of the fights. I say that I don't see how the Brazilian guy (Anderson Silva) can lose. This seems to be the answer that he wanted. He is slapping my back and congratulating me during the fight (which was pretty one-sided). A different waitress comes to get our drink orders and she seems to think that I'm with these guys. She asks for my order in spanish. I manage to tell her in Spanish (barely),that I'm on a separate check and that I'll have another guinness, but that I don't really speak spanish. This makes the guy next to me laugh hysterically. We appear to be bonding. Fast forward...I have asked for my check and am preparing to leave after the prelim fight that they show. Now the guy buys me a Corona. That's very nice. I toast Anderson Silva with him and try to drink me beer at a fast but reasonable speed. I'm trying to leave, but he now buys another one. What the [censored]? Now I feel stuck. After this one, he wants to buy shots. I tell him that I have to go to work in the morning, but that his shot is on me. He tells me that he works at this very bar (bussing tables) and then asks me what I do. I somehow don't think that I can tell him what I actually do. "Yes, I'm a doctor, but I've let you buy me two drinks so far and I think I'll leave now."

I lie to him and tell him I'm a cook (which I certainly have been during my life). I get a Guinness for me and for him and his one friend who is still there. I drink this extremely quickly and then leave.

I feel like a schmuck.

Verdict? Am I a jerk?

so, essentially, you go into a bar looking like a Mexican. and you inadvertently befriend some Mexicans. then you lie about your profession to some Mexican you don't even know.

no, you aren't a jerk imo.

well if you feel like a jerk, then you obviously wish you had done something different. What exactly do you wish you had done?

If you answer is you wish you hadnt done anything different, then I think you're ok

You're a jerk for trying to sneak in the "I'm a doctor brag" in a bar thread.

It's just a couple of shots - drink up or stop going to bars.

Were you uncomfortable making friends with Mexicans, or with letting them know you're a doctor?

Either way, it sounds mildly jerky, but nothing to have a life crisis over.

As a blue-collar born-and-bred guy now living a very white collar life, I can see where you're coming from, but you'll be happier if you get over it. There's really no need either to avoid people outside your regular social circles or to pretend you're something you're not.
