Kubica didn't hit head on, the camera angle vastly exaggerates the angle of the impact. It was 30 degree impact at most, which is vastly better for the driver than true 90 degree head on hit. If you hit at 174 MPH head on into a concrete object, your brain will simply hit your skull with unsurvivable force, and no HANS device will save you.
