I saw a rat in my apartment.
I'm only 20 so I'm naive when it comes to this sort of thing. Currently I'm renting an upscale second story apartment, which is rather nice and relatively new. Last night I saw a mouse/rat run from under the stove and try and eat my dog's food. I got a flashlight and followed it back, and I could tell it was relatively young/small, and there were a couple rat droppings back there but it definitely disappeared into the wall at some point.
I've got a giant phobia over roaches, and if I saw a roach inside my apartment I'd probably leave. My apartment isn't super clean, but it's definitely not filthy. Rats don't bother me so much, but I'm curious as to what course of action I should take. Call my landlord? Set a trap? Make sure my kitchen is cleaner? |

Call my landlord? Set a trap? Make sure my kitchen is cleaner? [/ QUOTE ] Don't bother your landlord. I would definitely make sure that your kitchen is as clean as possible. In addition, I would either set traps or put out poison. I had mice this winter in my condo. Curiously, I never saw them, although I saw the turds they were leaving. I placed out a few containers of the D-Con bait, and saw that they ate from one or two of them. After a couple of weeks, I didn't see any new turds, although fortunately I never found or smelled any dead mice. I assume they went off to die elsewhere. |

Re: I saw a rat in my apartment.
Rat traps are nasty but effective (nasty in the sense that cleaning up dead rats really sucks). Otherwise get a big cat, lol.

[/ QUOTE ] So far, the advice here has been abysmal. The answer is to contact your landlord and tell him there will be no rent forthcoming unless you see a serious pest control professional on the premises pronto. It is absolutely the landlord's responsibility to rid your "upscale apartment" of fricken vermin. And moving to Canada would just be adding insult to injury, by the way. |

Get some poison, clean the kitchen and contact your landlord. He doesn't want rats in there either.

Re: I saw a rat in my apartment.
ive had a mouse for awhile. I've been meaning to do something about it, just haven't gotten around to it. Im hesitant about the poison b/c I have a dog although I might look into getting some I can put in a spot my dog cant get to.

Re: I saw a rat in my apartment.
You can't do that with every lease every place.
Personally, I'd set out a trap, not bait. With bait, they might go in the wall or up in a vent and die, and the smell of rotting flesh could be with you for weeks if not longer. Better to deal with the exploded grossness of a trap, by far. |

Re: I saw a rat in my apartment.
Go buy some bait traps and stick them under the stove/behind the fridge etc.
When you mail your next rent check deduct the cost of the things you buy and attach a copy of the receipt to the check with a little note. |

Re: I saw a rat in my apartment.
put poison in your dog's bowl so if the rat eats it, he dies. it's foolproof!
