Maybe average salaries and contract lengths are just on the rise?
When players like Juan Pierre and Gary Matthews Jr. get contracts worth 45-50 mil... it makes you wonder: what the hell are these teams thinking?!?
Then you see Soriano, 8 years 136 million?! Are they crazy? Honestly, maybe average salaries are just on the rise. Should we expect to see Andru Jones and Vernon Wells get signed to contracts worth 23+ million/yr next year? 8 year long contracts? Is this a sign of what is to come in an ever expanding MLB market? (Note: I'm an idiot when it comes to this stuff, which is why I thought I'd post my thoughts here, to get more opinions. Feel free to rip me apart! ) |

It doesn't really matter whether or not the average salary is on the rise. GMJ is an average player. You could replace him with a minor leaguer for the minimum of around ~300k. It's just a horrible waste of payroll to spend 50 million dollars when you can fill that void for almost nothing and barely lose ability at that position.

An average player can not be replaced by a minor leaguer without losing a lot of value. The average major leaguer, by definition, is better than 350-400 other players in the big leagues.

Re: Maybe average salaries and contract lengths are just on the rise?
How much is "a lot of value"? A player who played like an average CFer last year would be someone like Shane Victorino. What do you think the dropoff from Shane Victorino to minor leaguer is?
And in GMJs case you already have a player who's costing you 6.5 mil less that is close to his production. With the huge explosion in the FA market, now, more than ever, 6-year players are HUGE values. There's no need to try to go out and sign a player when you have an average-ish player at that position locked up on the cheap. |
