Distant history for most of us, and I don't know if it'd be more shocking that sad, but I can imagine watching Jim McKay talk about the '72 Munich killings would've sucked.

The Valvano speech is great. Maybe this is retarded but I was pretty bummed when Magic announced he had HIV.

If you meant most uplifting and inspirational moments, then yes, these two are excellent candidates.

Watching Mark McGwire in front of congress was pretty sad.

[/ QUOTE ]Yeah, I don't think of these as "sad" moments at all.

The moment that comes to my mind is that Detroit Lions player that was paralyzed. When the hit had occurred I remember my dad putting his hand over my eyes so I couldn't see. He said that stuff like that wasn't for anyone to see especially not kids. Then they showed the replay and it was frightening.

I really reminded me of how mortal these guys are and I've always kept that image in my head, don't think I've ever dropped my head on a hit ever since I saw that. Yeah, that was the saddest moment. Anyone have an update on him?

That would be Mike Utley. From what I could gather in a few minutes of Googling, he's still wheelchair-bound but seems to be pretty active.

The New York Jets' Dennis Byrd suffered a similar injury the next season. Byrd seems to have made a full recovery.
