Default Welcome to 21st Century Soviet Rule - The \"Zampolit\"

NYT Link

[ QUOTE ]
In an executive order published last week in the Federal Register, Mr. Bush said that each agency must have a regulatory policy office run by a political appointee , to supervise the development of rules and documents providing guidance to regulated industries. The White House will thus have a gatekeeper in each agency to analyze the costs and the benefits of new rules and to make sure the agencies carry out the president’s priorities. This strengthens the hand of the White House in shaping rules that have, in the past, often been generated by civil servants and scientific experts.

[/ QUOTE ]

In 20th Century Sovier Union, these people were call "political officers" or zampolit. President Bushlenko now believes its necessary for political appointees to be responsible for policy statements for EVERY federal agency (including such agencies as the EPA and OSHA).

Uh, political appointees are already responsible for policy statements. The departments are already subordinate to the White House and the agency heads are political appointees. This is nothing to be concerned about. Actually, I happen to think that the average federal bureaurcracy could use a little kick in the butt.

Monopoly turns into a dictatorship. Seems pretty standard.

Read: Bureaucracy is ineffiecient. Lets create an additional layer of bureacrats to oversee this inefficiency. I wonder why government always grows in power with people like you who want to keep it in check with more government.

Read the second half of the excerpt as well as the remainder of the NYT article. While the head of the EPA (for example) has always been a political appointee, most of the WORK of that agency has been done by scientists and industry experts. These new political appointees are charged, by the White House, to consider the costs to business and must show where the free market has failed to correct the problem. That is, the politics will be in charge rather than the experts/scientists....

Who is supposed to be in charge of executive branch agencies?
Who is vested with "all" executive power of the federal government?

Hint: The answer has been the same since 1792.

The problem isn't who is in charge of this power, it's the amount and scope of the power being exercised. But any executive power that is exercised MUST be exercised by the President. He is the only person authorized by the constitution to exercise executive power. Of course he can delegate that power.

We need to limit the scope of this power, not allow people to exercise government power "indepentently".

Good example with EPA, they falsified the air quality report in Manhattan after 911 and said it was healthy when their own scientists said it wasn't. Result, many ground zero workers suffers permanent lung damage unnecessarily. Talking weeks and months afterword when it would have been relatively easy to protect the workers.

Maybe once their bosses have closer supervision, they can tighten things up a little bit there.
