Default NL50 Hand - When a bluff gets good??

Hi All,

I';d like you all to discuss the course of action on this flop please.

Villain hasn't been out of line at all and stats are 13/9/1.4 over 100 hands. I've been pretty TAG so far and havent shown any big bluffs or anything like that.

What your response to his minbet re-raise.

I'll post some more of the hand later.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $0.50 BB (5 handed) internettexasholdem.com

MP ($63.65)
Hero ($63.90)
SB ($39.55)
BB ($55.15)
UTG ($47.50)

Preflop: Hero is Button with 9[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 7[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img].
2 folds, Hero raises to $2, SB calls $1.75, 1 fold.

Flop: ($4.50) 5[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 6[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $2.5, SB raises to $5, Hero ??

Cheers,

Jon

What is so bluffy about raising 97s on the button?

Hero raises to $21 and then insta calls a shove?
Turn -> T
River -> T
Villain flips over TT
Hero throws himself off a cliff?

I don't consider preflop a "bluff". This is a pretty standard open for me, albeit towards the bottom end of my range.

I think call/get it on on turn is probably standard.

But sometimes I'll min3b the flop here. If he is just testing our cb (which I strongly believe to be much rarer here than we can sometimes think) then he is somewhat less likely to donk turn once we've called his tester. But he might call a m3b. And if we just call he may not bet enough to guarantee we can get it in - he might just bet small/f.

And ideally of course, if we 3b flop he might shove right here and now with {set/A7/overpair/whatever}.

So I think min re-raising has merits here.

3bet to 17$ish and hope he has a set/overpair, or flatcall if you think you will get value on a non pairing turncard form a hand like TT/99/77.

I agree, this is not a bluff preflop, this is a fairly standard 6max opening on the button.

Call the flop and c/r the turn. The problem with 3betting on the flop is that a bluff will fold 100% of the time, but if we check the turn villain may fire again. If he's got a set/two pair/overpair you'll probably be able to stack him anyways.

On the other hand, there are some middling overpairs that might get scared off by a good range of turn cards. And this guy's tight enough that big bluffs here seem unlikely.

I'd alternate between the two lines here, but I think I like raising now slightly better, mostly because in villain's shoes anything that I wouldn't call or shove over on the flop I'd probably check behind on the turn for pot control fairly often.

I 3bet the flop for 2 reasons.

1. Villain hasnīt comitted much of his stack yet.

2. How would you feel if a 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or a 9 came off? Do you feel that it would help your efforts to get the money in, with the best hand to boot?

So even if this looks like a safe flop to slowplay, there is really a whole lot of cards that kill your hand/action. Against my normal random opponent I would never slowplay here.
